What I realized is that having a bed bug scare makes you feel like a kid with monsters under your bed again. The anxiety, fear, and confusion about what to do led me to seek someone with authoritative experience dealing with bed bugs. I was skeptical, since you can never be sure how qualified someone is if you've never met them, and also since a bed bug situation naturally causes you to feel desperate for help, which I was afraid would be exploited. I'm glad I called Matthew for help. He inspected my space, and because he's dealt with so many cases, he could speak confidently about what he was finding / not finding, and how that related to the symptoms I was experiencing. I asked him many questions about my situation and about bed bugs, and I gleaned from the way he responded to my questions that he has a lot of experience dealing with bed bug infestations and that he stays up to date / educated on treatment methodologies. I saw a bunch of reviews where people said they had a bed bug scare, got Matthew to inspect their space, and learned that they didn't in fact have bed bugs, but something else, and I felt so certain that, unlike these people, I actually had bed bugs. He was able to convince me that I had a different issue going on, possibly carpet beetle, by presenting the evidence he was seeing for carpet beetles and the evidence that was missing for bed bugs or other pests. I wouldn't have known this if it wasn't for him! I had a hard time believing him right away, so he supplemented this with accounts of prior experiences dealing with bed bugs and by explaining that visual bite appearance and pattern is not an adequate measure for diagnosis since reactions vary so much across people and can also present similarly across different kinds of pests. He was very honest about his findings, which was the most helpful thing he could do. It restored my peace of mind to have a professional, experienced exterminator's opinion. And not just any pro—one I came to trust, and one who reasoned with me and answered my questions with evidence. Because he was able to rule out bed bugs, I am in a better position to solve this problem. Additionally, I will note that compared to another exterminator I spoke with, I did not feel pressured by Matthew at all. He was easygoing, personable, kind, helpful, patient, and empathetic. Sorry to anyone who is going through a suspected bed bug situation!
