Customer experiences

I had an unsatisfactory experience volunteering at Harvest Manitoba. Despite my initial enthusiasm to contribute to their mission, the reality fell short of my expectations. The primary issue was the lack of organization. Tasks were unclear, and there was inadequate guidance or training provided. It often felt like I was navigating the experience on my own, and with better support, my contributions could have been far more rewarding and effective. Communication was another significant challenge. Emails and messages frequently went unanswered, and there was minimal effort to keep volunteers updated on changes or important information. Volunteers should be valued and appreciated for the time they invest. Additionally, the work environment lacked a welcoming atmosphere. Some staff members and managers appeared dismissive and unapproachable, and more effort was needed to create a sense of community among volunteers. Overall, it seems that the organization prioritized securing free labour over fostering a positive and enriching volunteer experience. I would recommend volunteering here only if substantial improvements are made to their processes and culture. Moreover, I observed low morale among staff members, including managers and directors, along with high turnover rates. The CEO and vice president of finance seemed more focused on their substantial salaries than on cultivating a positive environment for volunteers.

My two sons and I volunteered at Harvest Manitoba earlier this year. They volunteered for over two months during school time, and I stayed on for around four months. We were glad to contribute our time and energy to a meaningful cause. In early July, I sent a polite email requesting recommendation letters for my sons, as they are applying for part-time jobs over the summer. Unfortunately, despite following up, I received no response at all. While I understand things can get busy, ignoring volunteers’ reasonable requests without any acknowledgment feels disrespectful and disheartening. I expected better communication and appreciation, especially considering the time we gave. I sincerely hope Harvest Manitoba will improve how it treats its volunteers and take them more seriously in the future.

Did Family Volunteer day, and the staff were super helpful, and had the whole thing running smoothly. It was a great experience for my kids. Will come back again to help out more.
