I have a solo law practice in Vancouver. I do mostly legal aid work (for folks who can't otherwise afford a lawyer). I hired Amanda and her team to do my bookkeeping for 2024. This involved catch-up/clean-up work for past months, tracking income and expenses going forward, and preparing and filing my GST return. I was assigned a bookkeper on Amanda's team who lived and worked abroad in a different time zone. Although I hadn't been informed that this would be the case, I didn't make a big deal of it and assumed that I would receive the same level of care, consideration, and competence as I would from a professional based in Canada. Going forward, however, it became clear to me that there was little or no communication between different members of Amanda's team. I was receiving different information from different individuals. At one point, I received an invoice for services I had not agreed to and a new one had to be issued. Precious time was lost because my instructions were not communicated to the individuals handling my file. Multiple rounds of meetings and follow-up communications were required to complete tasks. The bookkeeper based abroad was working in a different time zone and would only communicate with me at very particular times, usually early in the morning, peak hours for my business. At the same time, there were numerous errors that could not immediately be corrected because it was impossible to reach my bookkeeper after 12pm, and I wouldn't receive a response until the following day, at which point new errors would become apparent. It took weeks to complete relatively simple tasks such as preparing and filing a GST return because of errors compounded by a lack of communication. Eventually, the bookkeeper I was working with disappeared altogether without notice and a different bookkeeper, in a different time zone, was assigned to me. Shortly before my 2024 books were done, I informed Amanda that I would be switching services. As I said to her, I never expected anyone to work on my file or take my calls after hours or on weekends, but I did expect competence and timely communication, having paid for a professional bookkeeper. She offered to give me a debriefing call to get feedback, and we agreed on a time. She never called me and never followed up. That sums up the level of care I received from It's Your Time Business Services. I expected a professional bookkeper who knew what they were doing. I received incompetence and a complete failure to communicate. My new bookkeeper (who charges me the same amount as IYT, incidentally) immediately corrected mistakes made by Amanda's team. I don't expect her to work after hours or weekends for me either. But I get exactly what I pay for: a competent and professional bookkeeper who communicates with me effectively and in a timely manner.
